[편집]위 요약은 두 영어 낱말 hunt('사냥질')와 hound('사냥개')가 어원적으로 서로 무관하다고 사실상 주장하고 있다. 그러나 이같은 주장은 잘못된 것일 수도 있다.
Proto-Gehrmanic *hundaz를 보면, 동족 안에서의 어형 변화가 매우 미미하다. 이 사실은 이 동족이 확고부동한 어원에 뿌리박고 있음을 암시하고 있다. 그 어원은 과연 무엇일까? 훈족 아닐까? 훈족을 개 또는 늑대 취급하려 했던 것 아닐까?
도이치 Hund '개'의 원뜻은 Jäger '사냥꾼'이고, 동족은 영어의 hound '사냥개' hunt '사냥' 등이다. 만일 그렇다면, 영어의 hound와 hunt는 동족이고, 그렇지 않은 듯한 표현은 거짓! 그 각각의 어원 참조!
